Being a new creation involves seeking what is above and embracing a new way of life. Start by making a list of how your focus often gets caught up in earthly things. Next to that list, note new habits that can help elevate your gaze towards higher, spiritual goals.
Reflect honestly on your struggles. Be specific and transparent.
Becoming a new creation means stepping into a transformed self, made possible through Christ’s sacrifice. Colossians explains this transformation. Paul teaches that through Christ’s blood, we can put to death those things that draw our focus downward and instead be renewed in the knowledge of Christ.
By making a list we can better understand what it means to die with Christ and have our life hidden in His (Colossians 1:3). When we are hidden in Christ, our old habits lose their power over us. We cast aside anger, greed, and deceit by filling our minds with the knowledge of Christ (Colossians 1:5–9).
Transformation, Here I Come!
This transformation into a new creation is not something we achieve on our own. The Holy Spirit transforms us because our sins were nailed to the cross with Christ (Colossians 2:14). Paul states that Christ’s death reconciles all things, including us (Colossians 1:20). In Christ, we are liberated from our old ways.
Being a new creation isn’t merely about abandoning wrong behaviors. It’s about learning to live anew. According to Colossians 3:3, believers in Christ have died with Him. Through Christ, we can seek what brings new life.
We need to intentionally replace earthly practices with those that reflect “where Christ is seated at the right hand of God” (3:1). Paul outlines what seeking “the things above” looks like in Colossians 3:12–17, which includes practicing compassion, kindness, humility, patience, forgiveness, and love.
After making a list, I keep it in my Bible as a regular reminder of who I aspire to be in Christ. I’m learning to trust God to provide, to forgive myself and others, and to exercise patience in God’s plan. I’m learning to be honest about my sins and seek friends who hold me accountable.
