In many American churches today, the message of salvation often emphasizes grace, forgiveness, and eternal life—beautiful truths that draw hearts to Christ. Yet, a critical aspect of the gospel is frequently sidelined: the lordship of Jesus. Salvation is not merely a ticket to heaven; it is a call to surrender, to acknowledge Jesus as Lord over every facet of our lives. The failure to preach this transformative truth risks producing a shallow faith that seeks benefits without commitment, leaving believers spiritually stunted and churches misaligned with the fullness of the gospel.
What is the Lordship of Jesus?
The lordship of Jesus means He is the sovereign ruler of our lives. Romans 10:9 declares it is not a casual acknowledgment but a pledge of allegiance. To call Jesus “Lord” is to submit to His authority, aligning our desires, decisions, and actions with His will. As Colossians 1:16-17 reminds us, Jesus is not a peripheral figure; He is the center, deserving our total devotion.
The Problem Today
Yet, many churches in America preach a salvation that stops at forgiveness, neglecting the call to surrender. This watered-down gospel offers eternal security without the cost of discipleship, producing believers who treat Jesus as a savior but not as Lord. Without surrender, we remain vulnerable to spiritual warfare, unable to experience the transformation promised in Romans 12:2 and may very well experience Jesus telling us upon our death, “Depart from me, I never knew you” (Matthew 7:22-23).
Jesus Himself warned against a faith without lordship. In Luke 6:46, He asks, “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?” True salvation involves taking up our cross daily (Luke 9:23), denying self, and following Him. This is not legalism but love—a response to the One who gave His life for us. Churches that avoid preaching lordship risk fostering a culture where faith is reduced to a feel-good experience, devoid of the radical obedience that marks genuine discipleship.
The early church thrived because believers lived under Christ’s lordship, sharing possessions, enduring persecution, and spreading the gospel boldly (Acts 4:32-35). Today, we must reclaim this call. Preaching salvation without surrender creates a disconnect, leaving believers chasing worldly validation instead of Christ’s transformative power. Let us confess Jesus as Lord, surrender our lives to His rule, and trust that His light, as the transcript describes, will break every storm and lead us into true freedom.
